All those pictures are so pretty! I wish I could keep anything alive here! Maybe when I move I'll be able to have a few plants do well.

just an update on an earlier post of this thread....
We had discussed those hanging planters where the tomato (or other) plant hangs upside down.... and I mentioned that we had poor results last year trying 2 of them. Well, we are going to give it another try, just to see if there's any difference this year. This time we used 4 of the upside-down planters, and also some plants are planted on the ground in the traditional way.... we'll see. 2 tomatoes, and 2 pepper plants upside down... maybe we'll have better luck with them this year.

Well, they've only been hanging upside down for a few days, but already all 4 of them are beginning to curl themselves upright to reach skyward. Its like the little plants are being stubborn and saying "no, I will NOT grow upside down, its not natural"
We'll see.

We'll see. Plants do that. If there's light, plants will grow toward it. This is why when you have a growing plant in a window, it starts bending a little, if you don't turn it. (the fancy botanical term is phototropism, wherein a plant's movement is affected by light.) It could also be gravitropism, which is a reaction to gravity. (stems react negatively, growing upward, and roots react positively, growing downward) Botany is fun!

Last year it seemed that they didn't produce very good.

Hello my lovelies Well and update on the last little while Hubby and I have purchased a 1ha (2.5 acres) little lifestyle block in the Waikato - good gowing area of New Zealand. We plan on planting a lot of fruit trees so that I can make and sell jams and jellies, chutneys and pickles etc etc etc. So far we have planted 8 apple trees, and two cherry trees, however what I'm planning on planting is: Apples (All heritage varieties) Cherries Quince Pears Figs Chestnuts lemons Limes Mandarines Nectaries Plums Peaches Olives Blackberries Blueberries Raspberries Strawberries and of course we will have ducks and chooks, as well as a good sized vege plot, so we shouldn't have to purchase any fruit or veg in the next couple of years We are also planning on building a straw bale construction home, single level, and have two outbuildings, one for me to make my fuity gems, and one for Hubby to do his woodworking and woodturning (and to hide from me if necessary...lol) Thus far we 're just more concerned with keeping the calves out of eating the newly planted trees... we have a mama cow and her twin calves grazing there to keep the grass down and the fertalizer coming...

Think the tomatoes are trying to tell you something. My neighbor has some of largest tomatoes I've ever seen, they are very tasty and have that wonderful tomato aroma you can't buy in the grocery store. I think I'm going to have collect some seeds and to grow a couple of stalks on my lanai. Mab
