So, I went to see the new Star Trek movie, and came away with some VERY mixed feelings.

I don't want to spoil too much of the movie, but will give the main source of my discontent....

The writers and director decided that this would be a "reboot" of Star Trek, and as such they decided that it would be an "alternate universe" which is code for things will be different, get over it.

So they radically changed a few minor and one MAJOR part of the whole Star Trek universe.... in a "prequel" of all things that was supposed to be a story of what happened in the "past" with the young characters of Kirk, Spock and the rest. they even changed some of the personalities of the main characters.

Now I've read alot of the discussions on it, having been a Trek fan for many years... and the reasoning goes something like this:

1) It was going to be too hard to make new movies because you had to fit it into over 40 years of "canon".

2) It was going to be hard to get new fans to watch unless you completely broke with the old storyline and made a whole new story.

3) that it was too hard to make drama or suspense in a prequel because people would know how things were going to turn out, so with an "alternate timeline" it can be fresh and you don't know what will happen.

The director came out and said in an interview that if you don't like it don't watch it, and that he was always a Star Wars fan, not a Trek fan....

What do you guys think?

Personally, I was seriously disappointed and kept expecting that they would "fix" the timeline at the last minute somehow....I am a fan because I like the characters and the story... and they decided to just throw it all out and start from scratch...

Now this might seem a little disgruntled, but It seemed to me to just be a lazy writer's way out.... now they don't have to try so hard and don't have to make it "fit" into the actual story, and they can still cash in on the name recognition.

Fullmoon Cat and I finally watched this one, so I was finally able to read your post about it.

I was never a Star Trek fan, I saw one of the movies in the theatre when I was a kid (the one where Spock swims with the whales :?: ), so my take on this recent movie will be different from most. I thought it was good, from a film maker's standpoint, but there were a lot of things that I just didn't like about it. Most of my problems also came from the writing and how the entire movie was shot and given to the audience. I wanted to write about this sooner, but things came up in life and I haven't had time until now, so I don't remember many of the issues I had with it. Must mean it wasn't very memorable. ;)

During the first part of the film, where the bad-guys attacked the ship, I actually turned to my husband and said: I don't like this opening. I felt that they pushed the audience into a war way too quickly, while it was very pretty and awesome, it didn't catch me like they were probably hoping that it would.

I also just felt that the whole movie was "dropped." There were things that should have happened that didn't to make this a complete movie. I was left hanging, but at the same time, as a non-fan, I think they did a good job explaining most of what was going on. Unlike some movies that don't apologize if you've never seen a single episode of the television show or book they're trying to portray.

All in all, it was a fine movie, but nothing I'd ever think about again. Obviously, since I don't even remember the name of the bad-guys. Who, by the way, I think did a terrible job. I don't like Eric Bana to begin with, and I didn't even realize it was him until the end. I thought his character fell flat and was the worst one in the entire movie.

The biggest problem I had with it was that they destroyed the planet Vulcan.

Vulcan and its people were a major feature of Trek for the whole thing, ever since the 60's. It played a major part in lots of things all throughout the star trek storyline. This was a prequel, meaning that it was supposed to be showing the early lives of these characters and the universe.

The Director said that he wanted to destroy it so that he could make a clean break from the normal star trek universe. He also said he wanted it to be more like star wars... so he changed the way the weapons worked, the ships worked, the aliens looked and so on.

they basically just say, that this is a whole "alternate" universe, and that all the other stories still exist. But here's a question about that.... usually the characters go through alot of effort to "repair" changes in the timeline. Why would you ever need to worry about someone going back in time to change the world if your world didn't change and it just became an "alternate".

Anyway, that's my gripe. I think it was a lazy way out. They could still have made a good, interesting story and not blown up vulcan.

I seen it when it came out in the theater I thought it was o.k. but not great the beginning was to odd they should have given a little more detail on what was happening and yes the destruction of volcan was way wrong thats a major part of star trek the special effects were good but it was a bit hard to follow I found thats my take on the movie.
